One of the most common issues that is presented to our stores is what is known as the 'nVidia issue'. This occurs on 2007-2008 pre-unibody Macbook Pro's (15 and 17-inch).

The symptoms are simple: the Mac turns on, the frontside LED turns on and the system chimes. However, there is no output to the display. Even when plugged into an external monitor, there is no output.

What is happening?

Due to heat issues, the graphics chip (made by GPU maker nVidia) fails under stress and cannot be recovered without being replaced. On Macs the entire system is built onto a single board – called the Main Logic Board (MLB). As a result, you cannot purchase a graphics chip for your Mac, but instead the entire logic board must be replaced.

AppleCare acknowledge this is an issue from manufacturing rather then user error so they have extended the warranty under a quality program. This allows customer to receive a new logic board without having to pay for it. In order to qualify for this you must bring your Mac into one of our stores and we can run a very simple diagnostic test to make sure it qualifies.
